Tribute & Message From The Family

Mary Jane Speece Edenton died June 14, 2013. A long-time resident of Jackson, TN she and her husband moved to Germantown, TN in 2010 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. She was born in Fairview, OK in 1921 to the late Robert Lee and Mary Topley Speece.

She attended William Woods College and graduated from the University of Oklahoma. While at OU, she was a member of Delta, Delta, Delta sorority, crowned Miss University of Oklahoma and met her future husband Bruce Carlisle Edenton, Jr. who was stationed in Norman, OK at the US Naval Base. They celebrated 68 years of marriage before he died in 2011.

Mrs. Edenton was involved in many civic and community clubs in Jackson, TN. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, served as past president of the Cotillion Club, Service League, Town and Country Garden Club and Ingleside Book Club. In 1971, she served as a Memphi Dutchess in Memphis Cotton Carnival.

Mrs. Edenton leaves her children Jane Speece Edenton Wills, Mary Topley Edenton, and Bruce Carlisle Edenton III, all of Memphis; her grandchildren Mary Edenton Willis of Charleston, South Carolina, Walter Douglass Wills IV and Bruce Carlisle Edenton IV both of Memphis and a special cousin Ann Reneau Asbury of Oklahoma City, OK.

A family graveside service will be held in Jackson, TN at Hollywood Cemetery on Sunday, June 16 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. at the home of Amy and Edenton Smith, #44 Timberlake Estates, 1104 North Parkway, Jackson, TN. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials sent to First Presbyterian Church of Jackson, 1573 North Highland, Jackson, TN 38305, Youth Town of Tennessee, P. O. Box 1385, Jackson, TN 38302, or the charity of the donor's choice.
