Dr. Benjamin F. (Jack) Benton, passed away Saturday April 6, 2013 at Baptist Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He was born January 6, 1924 in Jonesboro, Arkansas to Ellsworth Benton and Freda Wening Benton. In 1932, the family moved to Steele, Missouri, and he graduated from high school there at age sixteen. He attended under graduate school at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, when during this time he joined the Army Reserve and was commissioned 1st Lt. in U.S. Army. He completed two years of medical school at the University of Missouri and transferred to the University of Tennessee, graduating in June of 1946. He interned at St. Vincent Hospital in Bridgeport, Colorado and his General surgery Residency was at the University of Tennessee. A member of the American Medical Association and College of Surgeons, he practiced general surgery in Memphis for twenty five years, then moved to Port Charlotte, Florida and practiced there for twelve years.

Preceded in death by his wife Lou Stobaugh Benton and his parents, he is survived by his one daughter, Kathy Miller (Mark) of Fayetteville, NY; his two sons, Mark Benton (Carla) of Collierville, TN and Steve Benton (Kathleen) of Carmichael, CA; his step-sons Mitch Stobaugh (Terri) of Memphis and Rick Stobaugh (Sue Ann) of Olive Branch, MS; his step-daughter Beth Taylor (Ed) of Memphis; his nine grandchildren, Eric, Bryan, and Jessica Miller of Fayetteville, NY, Josh Benton (Lousia) of Memphis, Rachel Saylor (Tyler), Lara Benton, and Rachel Benton all of Collierville, TN, and Christopher and Elizabeth Benton of Carmichael, CA.

The family wants to give special thanks to Marvis Applewhite, his loving and faithful caregiver for two years, who was always there for him.

Visitation will be 9:00-10:00 a.m. Saturday April 13, 2013 at Canale Funeral Directors with the service following at 10:00 a.m. Private burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to First Baptist Church where he was a member, 200 East Parkway North, Memphis, TN 38112
