Charles R. Demetrio, 93, of Memphis, passed away at the State Veterans home in Oxford, Mississippi, on Tuesday, August 13. Mr. Demetrio was born in Wartburg Tennessee, the son of a Lutheran minister. He graduated from Memphis State College with a Bachelor of Science degree in June, 1941.

Mr. Demetrio enlisted in the Army on September 11, 1943. He served in World War II and was stationed with the Dental Corps in Brazil. He was awarded the American Service Medal, The World War II Victory Medal, The Good Conduct Medal, and the Meritorious Unit Award.

After the war he moved to Washington D.C. where he worked for the president of the United Transportation Union. He later worked for the Cleveland plain dealer. He retired and moved back to his hometown of Memphis. He was a world traveler and visited many countries. During his travels he was an avid collector of antiques and fine art. His hobbies included tennis, playing Shanghai Rummy and cooking gourmet meals.

He is preceded in death by one sister, Hulda Marie Smiley and one brother, Edwin Demetrio. He leaves behind one brother, George Edwin and 3 nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 2:00-2:30 pm Friday August 16th at Christ the King Lutheran Church with services to follow at 2:30 pm.
