John Joseph (Aloysius) Whalen "Bubba", 96, of Memphis, TN passed away Friday, May 24, 2013.

He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church where he was an usher and a devout Roman Catholic. He was retired from American Commercial Barge Lines where he worked for over 50 years and had many friends in the cities of his work in the Southeast. John was very proud of his service in the Air Force during World War II. Bubba was a strong southern gentleman. He was both gruff and compassionate from being raised during the Great Depression. That upbringing also gave him his great sense of humor. He enjoyed his Saturday lunches at Houston's. He loved to be at the beach. He read 3 newspapers a day and loved to follow the stock market. He loved his family and friends and he touched many lives.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edythe Caldwell Whalen, his mother Katherine and father Patrick, also his sister Kathryn and brother Patrick. He is also preceded by his friend Jeri Fitzpatrick of Louisiana. He is survived by his nephew Ned Caldwell and his wife Martha of Hollywood, Florida; Kathleen and Dr. John Pender, Jr of Memphis, TN. Their children: Mary Helen Pender Moore, children Joseph and Ashley Kate, husband Rick; Kathryn Pender Beggerow, children Chason and Emily, husband Chason; his godson John Pender III, children Jack and Mary Grace, wife Shally.

John also leaves his dear friend Rita Glenn of Memphis, TN and her daughter Martha Gregory, her daughters Julia and Ashley Bracken and her many other children and grand-children from Minnesota and Iowa. He also leaves behind friends Kathleen and Micky Marcel of Louisiana.

We would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff for all of their kindness and support at St. Francis Hospital and Kindred (Primacy) Health Care. We would also like to thank the staff from Senior Care Management Solutions as well.

Visitation will be 12:30-1:30 p.m. Friday, May 31 at St. Peter Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will begin at 1:30 p.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
