Mary Clayton Martin Saunders, age 91, died peacefully at her home. A native Memphian, Mary Clayton was the youngest child of John Donelson and Savilla Driver Martin. She graduated first in her class at Miss Hutchison's School and then graduated from Randolph Macon Women's College in Lynchburg, Virginia. In 1943 she married Lt. Robert Mills Saunders in the chapel at Barksdale Field where he was a B-26 pilot. They were married 53 years until Mr. Saunders' death in 1996. They loved to travel, visited all 50 states and spent many happy seasons in their Monteagle mountain home. While he was overseas, Mary Clayton worked for the now defunct Memphis Press Scimitar and later became a realtor with Thompson and Russell.
Always interested in her community, Mrs. Saunders served on the boards of Family Service, Junior League of Memphis, Les Passes and Womens' Exchange and was an early volunteer for the Fund for Needy Children. She was also a member of the Colonial Dames, the Tuesday Study Club and the Dils. A life-long member of Idlewild Presbyterian Church, she served often as Bible Study leader and Circle Chair.

She is survived by two of her five children, Robert Mills Saunders, Jr. and Erin Hull Saunders and by her 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Also preceding her in death were her sons Charles David Saunders, Clayton Driver Saunders (Vicki) and John Donelson Martin Saunders (Linda).

Visitation will be from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013 in the Lord's Chapel at Elmwood Cemetery. Funeral Services will be 3:00 p.m. in The Lord's Chapel will burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Church Health Center, Wings Cancer Foundation, the Memphis Humane Society or the charity of your choice.
